Step 1 — Lay out and excavate. Mark the patio with stakes and string, then dig out 7 to 12 inches of soil (base depth + sand + paver thickness). Slope the excavation away from the house at about 1 inch per 4 feet for drainage. Call 811 before digging.
Step 2 — Build and compact the base. Add crushed stone in 2 to 3 inch lifts, compacting each lift with a plate compactor. This is the step that determines whether your patio stays flat for decades. Do not skip lifts or rush the compaction.
Step 3 — Screed the bedding sand. Spread a uniform 1-inch layer of coarse sand and screed it flat with a straight board riding on two pipes. Do not walk on it after screeding.
Step 4 — Lay the pavers. Start from a straight edge or 90-degree corner and work outward, keeping consistent joints. Cut border pavers with a masonry saw. Snap the field pattern to a string line so it stays square.

Ways to Save Without Cutting Corners
Choose concrete pavers over natural stone. A quality concrete paver that mimics stone costs less than half as much and installs faster because the pieces are uniform.
Keep the shape simple. Every curve and angle means more cuts, more waste, and more labor. A clean rectangle or gentle radius is dramatically cheaper than an intricate design.
