Is gravel sold by the ton or the cubic yard?
Both, and it causes constant confusion. Suppliers often price by weight (ton) but you plan a project by volume (cubic yard). One cubic yard of gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons, so a 3 cubic yard job is about 4.2 tons. Our gravel calculator gives you both figures.
How deep should mulch and gravel be?
Mulch beds want 2–4 inches — enough to suppress weeds without smothering roots. Gravel driveways want 4–6 inches over a compacted base. Depth drives volume directly, so getting it right is the difference between one delivery and two.
Do I need drainage behind a retaining wall?
Almost always. Water building up behind a wall is the number-one cause of failure. Walls over about 3–4 feet, or any wall holding back saturated soil, need gravel backfill and a drainage pipe. Use the drainage calculator alongside the wall calculator.
How far apart should fence posts be?
Most fences use 6 to 8 foot post spacing. Eight feet uses fewer posts but needs stronger rails; six feet is sturdier and standard for taller privacy fences. The fence calculator works out posts, panels, and rails once you set spacing.
