Why is my roof area bigger than my house footprint?
Because of pitch. A steeper roof covers more surface than the floor area beneath it. A 1,500 sq ft footprint on a 6:12 pitch is about 1,677 sq ft of actual roof. Our roofing calculator applies the pitch multiplier for you so you order enough material.
What is a “square” in roofing?
A square equals 100 square feet of roof surface — the unit roofers quote in. Asphalt shingles come three bundles to the square. Knowing your square count is the fastest way to compare quotes and order material.
How much waste should I add for roofing?
Plan on about 10% for a simple gable roof and up to 15% for roofs with many hips, valleys, and penetrations, where cuts create more offcuts. Complex roofs waste more, so measure hips and valleys carefully.
